Florescu and Feilding MSA Formula Winners in first weekend

Carlin’s Petru Florescu got off to the perfect start for his second year in the MSA Formula. The Carlin driver finished first in the first race of the championship, starting on pole, and taking fastest lap in a dominating race that saw a Carlin 1-2-3. A chaotic, rain speckled second race saw Sennan Fielding take the hard fort win as it slipped from Jamie Caroline’s grasp. Florescu was back on top for the final race of the weekend, Red Bull sponsored Luis Leeds and team mate Pull completing the podium.

Race One

The first race of the season saw Florescu start on pole ahead of team mate Pull and Fewtrell. Luis Leeds started alongside Fewtrell on the second line of the grid and Quinn, the best qualifier of the rookies, behind him.

Quinn fell away from the lead at the start of the race, slipping down to eighth in the first lap.

Whilst Florescu pulled away from the pack, setting fastest lap after fastest lap, teammate De Francesco was starting a battle with Goddard. The two drivers swapped and changed places and, soon enough, Quinn joined the battle in a three way scrap for eighth.

The first of what will most likely be many safety cars was called out after Ross Martin found himself off the track at Druids. Before the race could be neutralised – and Florescu’s impressive lead eliminated – Caroline made a decisive, perfectly timed move on Martins, snatching sixth place from the Arden driver.

There was only a lap to go by the time the safety car returned to the pits, and Florescu was not about to give up the win he’d had in the bag from the start, getting a good start from the off.

Caroline didn’t have such a good start, coming under pressure from Martins, but managing to stay ahead of the Brazilian.

Race Two

The partially reversed grid put Zane Goddard on pole with Quinn alongside him. Once again, Quinn had trouble at the start, falling back to P6 and then going off track after contact with De Francesco.

Ahead of them, Martins took the race lead from Goddard, then Caroline took second from him. The battle for the win was just beginning. There was side by side action up and down the field but, perhaps most importantly, it was there at the front.

Caroline took the lead on the third lap, only to go wide soon after and fall back to fourth.

The battle for the lead was on again when the safety car was called out once again. A greasy track was making it a little difficult for the young drivers, and a number of cars had wound up in the gravel traps along the short Brands Hatch circuit.

After one lap of squabbling once the safety car had returned to the pits, the red flag was brought out for the rain – not too heavy, but bad enough that slicks might be dangerous.

It looked as if Martins had won the race, with Fielding having to settle for second, but there was movement in the pits as the teams started to change for wet tyres. The race was to continue for eight laps.

Fielding was slow to get off the new grid, gifting Caroline second place. The Jamun Racing driver managed to get into first by the second lap. Carlin’s James Pull wasn’t going to let him have an easy win, coming alongside Caroline and squeezing him as best he could, but Caroline hung on.

Trying to distinguish the battles between the first five cars became impossible. Caroline was defending from Pull, who was being attacked by Fielding, who had Martins alongside him. Goddard was trying for fourth…

Goddard took the first victory, snatching fourth place from Martins and taking him out of the mix. Not long after, Pull overtook Caroline for the race lead, only for Sennan Fielding to overtake them both and cross the finish line in first. At least two broken front wings between the five of them and Goddard missing a rear wing, the drivers just about managed to finish without another safety car.

Race Three

Florescu was back on pole for the final race of the weekend, Luis Leeds alongside him and Pull behind him again. Leeds attacked Florescu for the win off the starting line, coming side by side with the Carlin driver, with Pull looking up the inside to make a move of his own. Florescu stayed ahead and started to pull away as Pull challenged Leeds.

Further back, there was a battle on for the eighth as Goddard and Martins challenged De Florescu. A small contact between Goddard and Martins wasn’t enough for either of them to lose position, but it gave De Florescu the chance to start to pull away.

On the final lap, Leeds began to catch up with Florescu, but it was too late to mount a proper challenge and he had to settle for second place.
