Simmons and Goddard collide at end of race two

Ayrton Simmons had been on track for a haul of points in his second race when a collision on the final lap sent him plummeting down the standings.

After starting fifth, a number of incidents had pushed Zane Goddard down through the field, but the Australian was on a strong recovery drive when a move on Simmons didn’t go to plan.

“Up until that point, it was a really good race,” Simmons said. “The start was brilliant. I managed to stay out of trouble, made a couple of good overtakes as well.”

Simmons started eleventh, but had made his way up to seventh when, on the final lap, Goddard caught up with him.

“I went to defend to the left hand side of turn four which is a tight hair pin,” Simmons explained. “I went to move to the inside line to cover my place and next thing I know is I’m in the grass with a damaged rear wing.”

Goddard said he wasn’t sure about what happened in the incident.

“I just tried doing switch back on him [Simmons],” he said after the race. “And I went into the back of him, unfortunately. We’ll have to check and see what happened.”

Both drivers were disappointed with the end result. Simmons still managed to take a rookie podium, but neither driver finished inside the points.

Tomorrow is another day, though, and with both drivers optimistic they can continue the pace from this race, there might be a positive finish to the weekend.
