Ingram: Experience key to consistency

Speedworks’ Tom Ingram hopes the experience of running at the front of the field last season will help to make his 2017 season more consistent.

Consistency is the word of the year for Ingram, who had a mixed 2016 despite it being his best season to date. The 23-year-old took two wins and six podiums last season, but he also took 10 pointless races.

“From where we were last season, the development we made over the year, with taking our first win, and all the pole positions and the pace that we had was just superb, and that makes it a very easy decision for me to come back [to Speedworks] for ’17, but put a proper title charge together,” Ingram told Overtake Motorsport. “With points consistently, every weekend, and outright pace, I think we could have a proper shot at the title.”

The consistency only comes with experience, Ingram believes. After taking such a big leap forward in 2016, he hopes that, now the team have had a taste of the sharp end of the field, the team will have the experience they need.

“Until last year, we’d never been in that position where we were consistently at the front so it’s a very different experience being up front to what it is being just inside the top ten,” Ingram said. “It’s just knowing when to do certain things. There’s a lot more experience that’s come from me, I’ve learned a lot. The team have also learned a lot so it puts us in a really strong position going forward.”

Speedworks’ biggest challenge this year will be keeping up with the development of the rest of the grid, but Ingram believes that, if the team starts strong, they’ll be able to keep the momentum through the year.
