Ashley Sutton will join Team BMR for his second season in the British Touring Car Championship. Sutton joins Jason Plato and James Cole, whilst a fourth driver is expected to be announced soon.
Sutton made his British Touring Car Championship debut last season with Triple Eight Racing after winning the Clio Cup title in 2015. The rookie took a single overall win and the Jack Sears Trophy for rookie drivers.
Through all this, Sutton was a member of the Team BMR Academy, which he joined at the end of 2014.
“Not for one second did I think that two years down the line I would be part of the BMR factory team; let alone with a BTCC Manufacturer like Subaru,” Sutton said. “I thought I had hit the jackpot in my debut season in securing a Manufacturer drive but now, being part of Subaru and the package that comes with that, has certainly topped it for me.”
After achieving his “personal goals” last season, Sutton has set higher aims for his second year in the championship. The goal is to make it to the final round of the championship with a shot at the title.
Sutton is also looking forward to working with Plato, who will be staying with the team for a third consecutive season.
After a difficult start to the season, Plato ended 2016 with a mathematical shout at the championship going into the final round after multiple wins throughout the season.
“I predict 2017 will bring much success. I’m energised and looking forward to fighting for the championship,” Plato said. “Our team goes from strength to strength. We have a fantastic new addition to the squad in young Ash Sutton. I’m certainly expecting him to be right in the thick of the action.”
