Smith takes surprise pole at Brands Hatch

Jeff Smith has taken the first British Touring Car Championship pole position of his career in a weather affected qualifying at Brands Hatch.

Multiple red flags and showers mixed up the grid for the first race of the 2017 season. Smith pipped Speedwork’s Tom Ingram to pole by just 0.062s.

Smith put his Honda on provisional pole just moments before the red flag was brought out to clear Ash Sutton’s Subaru. Multiple drivers found themselves in trouble on the changing Brands Hatch Indy circuit, including Gordon Shedden and Ollie Jackson.

Dave Newsham was the only other driver to bring out a red flag, when he ran off at paddock hill bend in the first ten minutes of the session.

Shedden and team-mate Matt Neal locked out the second row of the grid, ahead of Colin Turkington and Adam Morgan.

Senna Proctor was the fastest rookie, but it was a far from perfect session for Power Maxed Racing driver. After Sutton’s car was cleared and the track turned green again, Proctor ran straight on at druids and stopped on track, but the Vauxhall was in a safe place and no red flag was needed. He will start the race in 16th.
