Satellites (and Viñales) Lead While Factory Teams Struggle

The Friday sessions in Argentina kicked off with FP1, Maverick Viñales swooping to the top of the leader board with a 1’40.356 on medium rears, despite a nasty wobble that managed to set off his suit’s built-in airbag. Not quite as lucky, Marc Marquez found himself in the gravel after losing the front half way through the session.
Most of the field opted towards the soft rear, erring on the side of caution, and going straight into a time-attack run to set their best laps in case of unpredictable afternoon weather.
All riders were instructed to complete 6 laps on the hard-rear tyres due to issues faced last year, with a 6-place grid penalty the costly alternative.

In the afternoon session, all riders were able to improve upon their morning times. The results saw Viñales still topping the sheets, Marquez making a considerable jump from 11th to 2nd, and returning rider Karel Abraham rounding out the top 3 with an uncharacteristically strong performance.
Other surprises include Loris Baz’s jump to 6th, Andrea Dovizioso falling from 7th to 14th, Valentino Rossi struggling in 16th and Rossi’s former Yamaha teammate Jorge Lorenzo bringing up a lonely 18th.
