Bird continues success with pole ahead of New York ePrix two

Sam Bird secured Virgin Racing’s second pole of the weekend ahead of this evening’s New York ePrix.

The Brit could only manage fourth fastest in the group qualifying stages, but a clean lap in super pole put him 0.037s ahead of Felix Rosenqvist in second.

Rosenqvist was top of the timings after the second qualifying group but was later knocked down to P2. He couldn’t improve on the position with a scruffy super pole lap, and will start second on the grid, ahead of Jean-Eric Vergne.

In only his second ever Formula E qualifying, Pierre Gasly topped the times in the group stage but he didn’t repeat the feat in super pole. The Red Bull Junior was eight tenths of a second slower than Bird and will line up fourth on the grid. Team-mate Nico Prost could only manage P15, but will start P14 as Robin Frijns takes a 10 place grid penalty.

Rounding off the top five was Nick Heidfeld. The German just pipped Maro Engel into the super pole shoot out, but tapped the kerb on his flying lap and finished super pole nearly a second slower than Bird.

Oliver Turvey was seventh fastest, ahead of Daniel Abt and Lucas Di Grassi, who damaged his steering on his flying lap after clipping a wall.

Tom Dillmann rounded off the top 10 ahead of Frijns and yesterday’s podium finisher Stephane Sarrazin.
