Ginetta Junior racer Connor Grady will compete in the Renault UK Clio Cup Junior championship as he prepares for a campaign in the senior series next season.
Grady, who currently races for Douglas Motorsport in the Ginetta championship, will compete with WDE Motorsport in the new Clio Cup junior series, which is due to begin next month.
“I am pleased to be joining WDE and would like to thank Wayne [Eason, WDE team principal] for putting this deal together at short notice – he and my father used to race karts together so I feel at home,” he said.
“I’m looking forward to the change to front-wheel-drive and testing the Clio Cup Junior car. The prize Renault has put up is mega so it’s important I do this championship as I will be progressing to the senior UK Clio Cup in 2018. I can’t thank my sponsor Peter Brown enough.”
The junior series should be good preparation for Grady, as he will race a car near-identical to that used in the senior championship. He would also earn a free registration in the Clio Cup if he wins the championship.
Grady is currently 10th in the Ginetta Junior championship, which runs on the same package as the senior Clio Cup series. His best finishes this season were fourth at Oulton Park and Snetterton, though he managed a second place at Knockhill last year.
“We are delighted to sign Connor for UK Clio Cup Junior – he’s a very exciting talent – and also confirm our presence in a championship we believe will take junior-level car racing to a whole new level,” said Eason.
“The technology, performance, and reliability of these cars are without equal in single-make saloon car competition and it acts as the perfect stepping stone to the senior UK Clio Cup – itself the ultimate stepping stone to the BTCC.”
WDE Motorsport is currently second in the teams’ championship in the senior series with two drivers fighting for the title.
The first round of the inaugural Clio Cup Junior championship takes place at Snetterton on the second weekend of September, having been pushed back from its original June start date.
