A new Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series team will take the track in the future.
StarCom Racing, a team operated by New Jersey-based telecommunications company StarCom Fiber, has formed the #00 Chevrolet SS for Derrike Cope. The team released the news on Monday.
“We are excited about this new business venture and have been working hard to build our team’s foundation on professional leadership and quality equipment that we intend to bring to the track within the coming weeks,” team owner William Woehlemann stated.
After shutting down his Xfinity Series team following the 2017 season, Cope joined Premium Motorsports on a part-time Cup schedule, his first Cup starts since 2009. Driving Premium’s #15 and #55 in 13 races, he sits 38th in points, and has a best finish of 31st at Bristol (spring) and Charlotte. The 1990 Daytona 500 winner left the team in September following the Federated Auto Parts 400 at Richmond (in which he finished 36th).
At the Pocono 400 in June, StarCom Fiber sponsored Cope’s #55, where he finished 33rd. Cope later drove the StarCom-sponsored #15 at Michigan and Richmond, finishing 39th and 36th, respectively.
StarCom Racing will be the first Cup team to field the #00 in six years. Michael Waltrip Racing last ran the number for David Reutimann from 2009 to 2011, winning twice. The two victories by Reutimann are the lone wins for the number in 335 total Cup starts. Cope’s #00 is also the first car to run a number starting with 0 since Reutimann’s #00 and Landon Cassill’s #09 in 2011.
UPDATE (09/26): The team has delayed its debut – initially scheduled for Dover – until further notice due to staffing issues.
“Due to personnel hiring & timing, StarCom Racing will withdraw from Dover to ensure a fully staffed quality crew,” the team tweeted. “00 will hit the track soon”.
