Goff on pole as electric problems hit Turkington

Jack Goff claimed pole in a disrupted British Touring Car Championship qualifying whilst electric problems hindered championship contender Colin Turkington.

From the first laps, it was clear Turkington had problems. The BMW limped around the track and back to the pits, where he spent most of the session as the mechanics tried to resolve the issue.

Team West Surrey Racing were helped when Josh Cook ran off into the barriers, bringing out the red flags and giving WSR extra time to solve the problem.

Turkington managed to get back on track late in the session, but couldn’t compete with Goff at the top of the order. His 1m31.598s put him 17th, seven tenths of a second behind Goff and, crucially, behind title rival Ash Sutton.

Goff’s team-mate Brett Smith brought out the red flag four minutes into the session, having run off at druids and beaching his Honda in the gravel.

Sutton claimed second late in the session, but was beaten to the front row of the grid by Laser Tools’ Aiden Moffat, who was six thousandths of a second faster than the Subaru.

Rob Austin finished fourth ahead of Tom Chilton and Matt Neal. Having topped the times early, Tom Ingram dropped down to seventh.

Jake Hill finished eighth with Adam Morgan and Jason Plato rounding out the top 10.

Rob Collard didn’t take part in the session and will not compete this weekend on medical grounds. He was cleared to race after check, but felt unwell after practice and did not pass a second round of tests.
