Aiden Moffat leads big name TCR UK driver announcements

Current BTCC driver Moffatt announced for TCR UK series as well as ex-BTCC drivers Derek Palmer Jr and Howard Fuller.

Aiden Moffat has become what could be termed the first ‘big’ driver announcement of the new-for-2018 TCR UK series after he signed to drive an Alfa Romeo Giulietta for DPE Motorsport. Moffat will race in all seven rounds of the series which kicks off on the Silverstone National circuit on Easter Sunday (1st April). No stranger to UK racing fans, Moffat has been racing in the BTCC for Laser Tools Racing since 2014, driving a Mercedes-Benz A-Class for the past three seasons and comes with a big fan following, especially in his home country of Scotland where the Knockhill round will race on the reverse layout in May for round two of the championship. He will continue his BTCC commitments in 2018 alongside the TCR UK campaign.

Racing alongside Moffat in a second Alfa will be 31-year-old Derek Palmer Jr. The name Palmer Jr will be recognisable from his time in the British GT championship as well as his 2015 season racing an Infiniti Q50 in the BTCC, taking a highest finish of 15th in race two at Snetterton.

DPE Motorsport team manager, Derek Palmer Senior, is clearly excited about the year ahead. “Any petrolhead loves Alfa Romeos”, he said, “and it fulfils a personal ambition of mine to run two of these fantastic cars with two brilliant young drivers in the British arm of the world’s top touring car series.” The team is hoping to add a third car later in the year.

Another exciting announcement sees Sean Walkinshaw Racing announce 25-year-old Howard Fuller as their full-season driver to pilot the teams Honda Civic TCR. Fuller, another ex-BTCC racer after running part-campaigns in both 2012 and 2013, will race the car tested by Sean Walkinshaw himself at the recent official TCR UK test day at Silverstone. “We’re really happy to have signed Howard for TCR UK”, commented Walkinshaw, “he’s a great driver and we have known each other a long time. It’s important for us to have a driver with touring car experience and Howard definitely ticks all the boxes.”

The TCR UK media day, originally scheduled for March 6th, was postponed partly due to a clash with the Geneva Motor Show and partly at the request of potential teams and drivers to allow them extra time to sort sponsorship deals. Todays announcements seem to justify that decision with yet more announcements expected over the coming days. The official Media Day will now take place on Good Friday (30th March) just one day before the cars take to the track together in earnest for the first qualifying sessions of the year.
