NASCAR: The final stop of the West coast swing hit the high banks and fast turns of Auto Club Speedway on Sunday. Martin Truex Jr and his 78 Furniture Row Racing team nabbed the pole on Friday with 13 other cars failing to make qualifying runs due to inspection issues. With the issues in qualifying drivers were allowed to start the race on fresh tires.
The man going for 4 wins in a row Kevin Harvick started the race out fast quickly moving up from his 10th place starting spot. Then late in stage one Harvick would make contact with Kyle Larson and damage his car significantly ending his hopes to get 4 wins in a row.
Truex was the dominant car all day sweeping the stages for the third time in his career. The defending champion looked to be back in form this weekend. This marking Truex’s first win at Auto Club Speedway in his career.
Kyle Larson would recover from his early incident with Harvick for a 2nd place finish. Larson who has won the last 4 races at 2 mile tracks ends the West coast swing on a high note. Kyle Busch would also end the West coast swing with another solid finish of 3rd. Brad keselowski and Joey Logano would round out the top 5.
Jimmie Johnson would also rack up his first top ten of the year with a 9th place finish in his number 48 Hendrick motorsports machine. Johnson and sponsor Lowes Home Improvement announced earlier in the week that they would be parting ways at seasons end. This will mark the end of a 17 year relationship as Lowes has been the primary sponsor of the 7 time champion Johnson since 2002.
The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series returns this weekend at Martinsville Speedway and the first short track of the year.
