Despite the tricky conditions, Petter Solberg heads the table after the first day of World RX of Spain, the first round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship.
Day one saw a number of drivers caught out in the very wet and slippery conditions in Barcelona but two-time champion Solberg made the best of them in his Volkswagen; his win in the second qualifying heat puts him at the top of the intermediate points table going into the second day.
Lying second overnight is Mattias Ekstrom who topped the table in qualifying one, whilst defending champion Johan Kristofferson sits in third place. Ekstrom’s new teammate Andreas Bakkerud lies fourth overnight completing a two-team top four.
Kevin Hansen is the first of the individual entries, run by Team Peugeot Total, in fifth place ahead of STARD’s Janis Baumanis.
Timmy Hansen didn’t get his campaign off to a good start – he crashed into the wall in heat one – but a comeback in heat two sees him lie seventh overnight. The highest of the OlsbergsMSE entries is Robin Larsson in eighth.
The two GC Kompetition Meganes of Jerome Grosset-Janin and Guerlain Chicherit round out the top ten.
Sebastien Loeb had a troubled day, ending up eleventh after suspension damage in heat two saw him finish at the bottom of the timing sheet.
Niclas Gronholm and his new Hyundai i20 is in the cut off position for tomorrow’s semi-finals, and his teammate Timur Timerzyanov lies thirteenth.
The only British entry is Oliver Bennett in the Xite Racing Mini Cooper and he sits fourteenth, still in reach of a semi-final place.
The last of the places go to Kevin Eriksson, Herve ‘Knapick’ and Gregoire Demoustier.
The conditions are set to improve for Day Two, and with the first final of the 2018 season up for grabs, we haven’t seen the last of this weekend’s action yet.
