The LMP2 World Champion will be behind the wheel at the next season- opening at six hours of Spa a spart of the Larbre Competition LMP2 squad and will drive the team’s Ligier JS P217 Gibson.

This comes after Fernando announced his withdrawal from the championship on an Instagram post earlier this week. In a statement issued by Rees he said “The plans have changed, and I will not be racing in WEC and in the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Larbre Competition.

“Unfortunately, the team suffered the loss of an important sponsor, and the solution they found to fill this hole in their budget was to put a paying driver to replace me. I’ve become an expense, and they needed a new source of income. Simple as that.

“It’s not a good situation for any of the involved – we all just lose with this, no one leaves unharmed.

“But with 25 years of experience in this world of motorsports, I know that shit like this happens, and I’m so grateful for having the Lamborghini programme running parallel to that (in the International GT Open series). At this moment, my focus is entirely theirs. Let’s push!”

Even though the season opening race will mark Canals return to the Jack Leconte-led operation, having claimed the WEC GTE-Am title with Labre in 2012, the deal is understood to currently be for Spa-only, as Canal’s full-season European Le Mans Series program will take priority first.
