Brazilian Pedro Piquet has reached a deal to race for Team Trident in the GP3 series this season.
Piquet, the son of three-time Formula 1 world champion Nelson, was expected to complete a deal with the Italian squad after impressing whilst testing for the team at the collective test in Abu Dhabi at the end of last season. The team kept the 19-year-old onboard for all three pre-season tests at the start of 2018 and completed the deal with one week to go until the season opener in Barcelona.
“I am very enthusiastic about my first GP3 Series season under the Team Trident banner.” said a confident Piquet. “It is a winning squad that, year after year, confirmed its position among the series’ frontrunners. I am sure I will find everything I will need to be a contender even in my debut season in the series”.
The South American finished in 14th in European Formula 3 last season for Van Amersfoort Racing, taking a single podium with second place at Norisring. Piquet also claimed sixth place at the season ending Macau Grand Prix of Formula 3, also known as the Formula 3 World Cup.
Piquet will be joining an experienced line-up at Trident with team mate Ryan Tveter entering his second season in the series, whist Alessio Lorandi and Giulianio Alesi will be third year drivers in 2018. There are now two four-car teams competing in the 2018 GP3 season as ART already have four drivers signed up to try and replicate the 1-2-3-4 in the points they held at the end of last season.
“It is with great satisfaction that we announce the agreement signed with Pedro Piquet, a highly-talented driver who will certainly impress and aim for some prestigious results in our team’s colours”. added Trident Team Principal Maurizio Salvadori. “I am sure that, within Team Trident, Pedro will find the right chemistry to show his full potential”.
