Ferrari have announced that Mick Schumacher has joined their young driver academy for 2019.

It has been widely reported over the last week that the son of seven-time world champion Michael, had joined the Ferrari Academy and this was finally confirmed by the Scuderia earlier today.

The reigning European Formula 3 champion attracted a lot of interest from both Ferrari and Mercedes in 2018 after having an incredible second half of the season, winning the F3 championship by 57 points. Despite the interest from Mercedes, Schumacher decided to join Ferrari’s academy, once again linking his family name with the Italian giants.

Schumacher tweeted that he was “overjoyed” to be part of the Ferrari Academy and said “Ferrari has a big place in my heart and also in our family, that’s why I’m happy on a personal level”.

New Ferrari boss, Mattia Binotto commented “There’s no doubt that welcoming Mick into Ferrari has a special emotional meaning, but we have chosen him for his talent and the human and professional qualities that have already distinguished him despite his young age”.

Whilst he won’t immediately be racing in Formula 1 next season as he has a contract with Prema for Formula 2, there is the opportunity Schumacher will be able to have outings for Ferrari at the young driver tests in 2019 and he could also be made available for Haas and Sauber if required.

Meanwhile, Ferrari have also announced that fellow Formula 2 racers, Giuliano Alesi and Callum Ilott have also joined the young driver academy along with Marcus Armstrong, Robert Shwartzman, Enzo Fittipaldi and Gianluca Petecof.
