It has been announced that London will be part of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship with a multi-year deal. Returning first in 2020 as part of Season 6.
Londoners can start to feel excited as it has been announced today that starting in 2020, it will return to Formula E with an all new style of E-Prix circuit. The first track of its kind, the London E-Prix will take place at the ExCel Centre with external and internal areas of the track, plus a section will run along Royal Victoria Dock, right next to the River Thames.
The 1.5 mile race itself will boast 23 corners and the pit lane will take place inside the centre, another first in the world of Formula E (subject to confirmation). The London E-Prix is scheduled to take place on 25th and 26th July 2020 as part of a double header which then would bring Season 6 to a close.
Formula E released a short video onto its social media platforms stating “Londoners, we’re coming for you!” and naming the city’s inhabitants as “the world’s most passionate fans”. With many UK drivers on the grid such as Sam Bird, Alexander Sims, Oliver Rowland, Gary Paffett and Oliver Turvey, this race is sure to mean a lot to the British racers and their home crowd fans.
As a previous London E-Prix winner, Bird spoke about the announcement and how much it means to him, “I’m absolutely delighted to learn that Formula E is racing in the capital in season six. To win your home race, in front of your home fans is one of the most memorable feelings for any racing driver so to have that opportunity again is a very exciting prospect. Its also great news for the championship as it’s such an important market both in terms of stature, but with also so many teams, workers and fan based in the UK. I just can’t wait to race now”.
Before we move onto Season 6, we continue on with Round 5 as part of Season 5 this weekend on Sunday 10th March in Hong Kong. Be sure to check back with Overtake Motorsport for all the on track action.
