Kevin Hansen takes the top qualifier spot after drama in Q3 for brother Timmy.

For the first time in his FIA World Rallycross Championship career, Kevin Hansen takes top qualifier in Abu Dhabi. The younger of the Hansen brothers recorded the fastest time of the weekend in Q4 after being top in Q3.

It was in Q3 that the drama unfolded with a big crash between Timmy Hansen and Andreas Bakkerud. The incident happened at the end of the third lap where the two cars merged from the joker lap and the normal lap. Bakkerud, on the normal lap, was carrying a lot of speed ahead of turn one and went straight into the side of Timmy’s car. The damage to both cars was significant. Bakkerud was out of the race whilst Timmy was able to make it to the flag, still winning the race. However, with the damage sustained to the roll cage put Timmy out for the rest of the weekend.

Bakkerud just made it to the grid in time for Q4. There was still damage on board and Bakkerud just completed the race. This dropped him from second to ninth overall ahead of the semi-finals.

Niclas Gronholm in the GRX Taneco Hyunai i20 had put together two strong qualifying races to move himself up to second overall. Whilst Timo Scheider scored the second fastest time in Q4 to move up to third.

Janis Baumanis was another with two good qualifying times, third in Q3 and fourth in Q4, to move him up from eighth overall to fourth ahead of Anton Marklund.

In the EKS Sport Audi, Krirsztian Szabo has proved his pace to go sixth. The second of the GRX Taneco, Timur Timerzyanov moves up to seventh whilst rookie Rokas Baciuska secured eighth.

The last to make into the semi-finals were Guerlain Chicherit and Liam Doran.

With Timmy unable to race there will be one spot left in the semi-finals. Tied for that position is Cyril Raymond and Reinis Nitiss and we wait to see who will be taking that place.

Not making the semi-finals are Pal Try, Guillaume De-Ridder and Oliver Bennett who had a roll in Q3 are taking too much curb.

The semi-finals and finals will be taking place under the floodlights later today at the Yas Marina .

UPDATE: Andreas Bakkerud is disqualified for the incident in Q3 and does not qualify for the semi-finals.
