Gronholm Top Qualifier in Hell comeback

Niclas Gronholm comes back after suffering with appendicitis to take overnight Top Qualifier at round five of the FIA World Rallycross Championship in Norway.

Gronholm has missed the last two World RX events due to appendicitis and made the best comeback going fastest in both of Saturday’s qualifying sessions to take the overnight Top Qualifier.

He is joined at the top of the overnight standings by GRX Taneco teammate Timur Timerzyanov. The round three winner, Timerzyanov, was third fastest in both of the day’s sessions.

Timo Scheider used joker lap strategies to his advantage to take two race wins and to be third overnight.

The only Norwegian on the grid, Andreas Bakkerud, was second in the morning session but got caught up at turn one in the second which dropped him to fourth overall.

Championship leader, Timmy Hansen, sits fifth ahead if Anton Marklund and brother, Kevin Hansen.

Cyril Raymond ends the day in eighth. ESmotorsport’s new driver Kevin Abbring suffered a mechanical failure in his second race which dropped him to ninth.

Janis Baumanis recovered from a DNF in Q1 with a fourth in Q2 to end the day in tenth. Krisztian Szabo is eleventh ahead of Liam Doran in the final semi-final spot.

Outside of the semi-final positions include Rokas Baciuska in his first weekend with new team GCK Academy. Guerlain Chicherit lost out in Q1 after a jump start. Guillaume De Ridder scored a DNF in Q1 after contact with Baumanis at turn one saw him stranded in the joker lap. Jani Passonen and Oliver Bennett are also at the bottom of the table.

Qualifying returns tomorrow with two more sessions ahead of the semi-finals and final.
