Hi everyone, sorry I haven’t written an article for a while, I’ve been extremely busy with Mercedes and everything!
After my brilliant week of work experience at Mercedes, I was delighted to volunteer at Dare to be Different’s schools event at Porsche Experience Centre Silverstone. Here’s how my day went…
Arriving at the Porsche Centre, at Silverstone, I saw all the hardworking teams arriving early to set up base for the British Grand Prix which was taking place that weekend. Although it was Wednesday and there was no racing on, we still saw the diehard fans sporting Lewis caps, making their way to various campsites across the circuit.
100 local school girls ages 8-11 were invited to the event, hoping to inspire them and show them all the different ways that they could be involved in motorsport. Myself and Chloe, another young karter, were in charge of the pit stop challenge, where the girls learnt how to change an F1 car’s wheel and see how fast their school could complete it. It was lovely to see all the girls being really enthusiastic and working really well in a team to get some great pitstop challenge times.
Also at the event, the girls got to become Sky sports presenters for the day with presenter Rosanna Tennet, make a STEM hovercraft, take part in a driver fitness routine and even be taken for a Porsche passenger ride. Along with all of this, the girls got to meet racing driver Nathalie McGloin, Claire Williams and Susie Wolff!
It was a fantastic day and afterwards as a reward, us volunteers got a Porsche passenger ride around the special track which was awesome!
In the evening, a D2BD community event, for members, was hosted at the Porsche centre. There was a chance to connect, network and eat some fabulous D2BD cupcakes and then there was talks from inspirational women in different aspects of motorsport, which were all very interesting and inspiring. I spoke to many inspiring people, including Jamie Chadwick, Tatiana Calderon (who remembered me from my interviews!), Louise Goodman and many more.
I had an amazing time and would love to volunteer for D2BD again! If you or anyone one you know is interested in getting into motorsport and D2BD make sure to check out there website-
