Shane Van Gisbergen wins the first of the World RX Esports Series at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi.
After the success of the World RX Invitational events, a four round series has been introduced. The series will be run on DiRT Rally 2.0 in partnership with Motorsport Games and Codemasters and will feature drivers from World RX, F1 and DTM.
At the opening round the Australian Supercars driver was fastest in all four qualifying sessions and went into the semi-finals as Top Qualifier where he would finish second. Van Gisbergen took a lights to flag victory in the final ahead of the FIA World Rallycross champion, Timmy Hansen.
The final podium position went to Henrik Krogstad after an eventful race. He hit the wall at the chicance on the opening lap and was collected by Tom Blomqvist and Kevin Hansen. He then went on to roll the car in the joker lap on lap one.
Blomqvist took fourth ahead of Kevin Hansen who spun at turn one after contact.
Missing out on the final were South Africa’s Kelvin van der Linde and the Jamaican, Fraser McConnell. From the second semi-final it was Rokas Baciuska, Youtube star, ‘Fail Race’ and Martin Enlund who was a last minute replacement for Oliver Bennett.
F1 driver Charles Leclerc made his WRX Esports debut and just missed out on a semi-final spot, despite a roll in Q3, with a race win in the wet Q4.
Run separately was semi-finals and final for the experienced esport racers. Quentin Dall’olmo took the win ahead of Lukas Mateja and brother, Killian Dall’olmo.
After the first round, Van Gisbergen leads the standings with 29 points ahead of the Hansen brothers both on 23.
World RX Esports Series returns on 21 June in Norway.
