Mazepin wins F2 feature race at Silverstone

Nikita Mazepin stormed from fifth on the grid to win the FIA Formula 2 feature race at Silverstone.

It’s Hitech’s second F2 win after Luca Ghiotto won the previous race in Hungary.

There was drama before the start when title contender Callum Ilott stalled from second on the grid at the beginning of the formation lap, forcing the Virtuosi driver to start from the pitlane.

Mick Schumacher took the lead at the start from third on the grid for Prema, while Mazepin moved into second past polesitter Felipe Drugovich on the first lap.

On the fifth lap Mazepin took the lead from Schumacher exiting Stowe corner and the pair ran first and second before pitting three laps later.

ART’s Christian Lundgaard, who also passed Drugovich on the opening lap, led for one lap before also pitting, losing out to Mazepin and Schumacher on cold tyres as he rejoined.

Drugovich now led, but was soon passed by Guanyu Zhou, who had made up places early on from eighth on the grid for Virtuosi.

Mazepin retook the lead once Zhou and Drugovich had pitted.

Zhou rejoined in eighth, but soon started make up places on fresher tyres than his rivals.

First, he passed team-mate Ilott for seventh, who had recovered well from the back of the back of the field.

He then picked off Schumacher, Tsunoda and Louis Deletraz before taking second from Lundgaard.

But he was unable to close in on Mazepin, who cruised to the win, ahead of Zhou, with Tsunoda taking the final spot on the podium after passing Lundgaard.

Ilott finished in fifth ahead of Deletraz and Drugovich.

Schumacher struggled after his early pitstop, slipping down the order to finish ninth behind DAMS driver Dan Ticktum, who secured reverse grid pole by passing Schumacher in the closing stages.

Championship leader Robert Shwartzman’s difficult weekend continued as he finished outside of the points in 14th for Prema.
