2017 Driver Ratings School Report: Karl Massaard

Year: First

Team: Double R Racing

TERM ONE

Grade: C-

Comment: It was a mixed start to his first season in the British Formula 4 championship. He claimed a handful of top five finishes, including a podium finish at Thruxton, but spent most of the first half of the year in the midfield. A number of retirements dotted his performances and he entered the summer break 10th in the championship.

TERM TWO

Grade: C-

Comment: Massaad’s results in the second half of the year became more consistent, but most of his results came at the bottom end of the top 10. The Double R Racing driver picked up his second podium of the season at Knockhill, helping him to ninth in the title fight.

Overall Grade: C-

Best moment of the season: Massaard started the rearranged Oulton Park race sixth on the grid at Knockhill. In the first half of the race, Massaard picked up positions as those ahead of him dropped backwards and was running third by the time a safety car neutralised the race. After the restart, Masssaard was able to pull away from Harry Webb in fourth, but he couldn’t stay close to Logan Sargeant ahead of him. He finished a comfortable third, taking his second podium of the season.

Worst moment of the season: Massaard suffered a number of retirements over the course of the season for various reasons. His last retirement of the year came in the final race at Rockingham. He had taken ninth on the grid, but fell backwards on the opening lap as he avoided contact in the midfield. He spent the race battling to find a way past Lucas Alecco Roy at the back of the field. He managed to pass the Carlin driver just after the midpoint of the race but couldn’t celebrate, having to pit to retire.
