Sebastian Vettel and Ferrari confirmed the split early on the 12th May after days of contract talks and rumours.
In a statement released by Ferrari and Mattia Binotto, the Scuderia have claimed the split was “amicable” and “one which both parties feel was best.” Vettel, however, reflected that there was “no longer a common desire to work together.” The news follows rumours that Sebastian Vettel was unhappy with an offer of a one year contract, but with a financial cutback.
The third most successful Ferrari driver has had a turbulent time as of late at Ferrari, with attention falling to 22 year old Charles Leclerc. The Monegasque finished above Vettel in the 2019 standings as well as achieving more wins and pole positions over the course of the season.
The rumour mill will now be in full flow as a host of drivers seem prime to take the empty Ferrari seat. Daniel Ricciardo’s contract at Renault runs out at the end of 2020, Lewis Hamilton is consistently linked with the scarlet team and Ferrari have a host of young talent rising through the ranks. The 2021 season might be about to make a huge turn, before the first race of 2020 has even taken place.
