Formula 2: Ticktum disqualified after winning Monza sprint race

The decision was taken after officials were unable to take a fuel sample from Ticktum’s DAMS car following the race.

Ticktum pulled off the circuit at Curve Grande moments after taking the chequered flag after appearing to run out of fuel.  The Williams development driver admitted prior to taking to the podium that he was unsure whether he would keep the win.

Callum Ilott, who finished second on the road, was promoted to the win following Ticktum’s disqualification, with the Virtuosi driver extending his championship advantage in the process.

ART’s Christian Lundgaard was promoted to second, and Prema’s Mick Schumacher – who won Saturday’s feature race – to third. Nikita Mazepin moved up into the points with eighth place for Hitech.

DAMS have blamed the issue that led to Ticktum’s disqualification down to a fuel leak, saying “it’s a miracle we finished”.

“This fuel tank problem has been known to the championship organisers and their suppliers for several races,” said DAMS Managing Director, Francois Sicard.

“The tank in Dan’s car was serviced three races ago, but we still had an issue. We had the right quantity of fuel for the race, in fact we put too much in as a safety margin and it’s a miracle we finished.”

“Of course I’m absolutely gutted by the disqualification,” Ticktum reflected.  “I know the team did nothing wrong and it was a problem out of their control. We executed a fantastic race today and I crossed the line first, so in my mind we’ve won.”
