Nico Mueller continues his qualifying pace, taking his second pole of the weekend at the Nurburgring. He beats his two championship rivals as Audi locks out the top six positions. Sheldon van der Linde best-placed BMW in seventh.

Rene Rast was the strongest of the championship leaders in the first half of the session. He set the pace with a lap time of 1:47.482. Robin Frijns then moved to the top with a time only 0.021 seconds faster. Though, not for long as Rast was on another flying lap to improve his previous time to a 1:47.225. No drivers were improving, so around halftime, after the first runs were done, the reigning champion had the provisional pole. Mueller was only 13th in the first half of the session but improved to sixth when he returned to the pits.

With seven minutes left on the clock, drivers headed out for their second runs. Only a few drivers improved with purple or green sectors. Frijns was the first to take the top spot. However, not for long as Mueller crossed the line with a 1:46.958. After the little setback early on in the session, none of the other drivers could go faster so he completes a clean sweep of pole positions this weekend at the Nurburgring. He hoped to make it an even more perfect weekend after yesterday’s victory.

Frijns had to settle for second place with a gap of 0.138 seconds to his Audi Team Abt Sportsline teammate. This won’t be the first time this year the two secured a front-row lock-out for the team. Reigning champion Rast improved his time on the second runs, but not enough to beat his main rivals. Therefore, he starts from third on the grid today. A strong qualifying as well for Mike Rockenfeller, who will line up alongside Rast in fourth place. The third row of the grid is filled by another Audi duo – Loic Duval and Jamie Green. This means the Audi factory drivers secured a top-six lock-out.

Best of the BMW’s today is Assen race two winner Van der Linde. Though, the gap to Mueller is 0.761 seconds. Starting from eighth, only 0.017 seconds behind his BMW teammate is Jonathan Aberdein. The top ten is completed by ART’s Robert Kubica – his best qualifying result so far this season – and Marco Wittmann. BMW’s Philipp Eng, Timo Glock and Lucas Auer will start from 11th to 13th on the grid. Then, starting from the last three positions on the grid are WRT’s Fabio Scherer, Harrison Newey and Ferdinand Habsburg.

The second race of the weekend is set to start at 13.30 local time (12.30 UK time).
