BTCC Silverstone: Cammish takes comfortable pole in damp conditions

Dan Cammish took a dominant pole at Silverstone in a wet-dry session from a charging Tom Ingram.

The gap of 0.198s was the largest gap between the top two in a qualifying session this season despite being on one the shortest tracks on the calendar.

The session started somewhat calamitously with James Gornall and Jack Butel colliding early on whilst warming up their tyres on the Wellington straight.

They made side-to-side contact with Gornall stopping by the side of the track with suspension damage and causing a red flag less than four minutes into the session.

Once the session was restarted Cammish went quickest with Rory Butcher taking the top spot soon after.

Cammish then jumped to the top again with a 57.465s.

Soon after the rain arrived which almost instantly affected the times.

The rain appeared to lessen about five minutes later with Adam Morgan and Cammish improving their times significantly.

Cammish broke the qualifying lap record with a 57.349s with no other driver able to get near to his time.

Ingram had jumped up to third but had his time deleted for track limits and was sent back to ninth before going second at the end of the session.

Ingram’s time of 57.547 was just 0.003s ahead of Rory Butcher who, in turn, was just 0.002s ahead of Colin Turkington in fourth.

The close gaps continued down through the field with everyone within a second of Cammish’s record time bar Nic Hamilton and debutant Jade Edwards.

Tom Oliphant and Matt Neal finished the session in fifth and sixth within half-a-tenth of each other.

Championship leader Ash Sutton will start tomorrow’s first race in seventh just ahead of Morgan and Tom Chilton.

Jake Hill rounded out the top 10 ahead of Ollie Jackson and Josh Cook.

Carl Boardley and Stephen Jelley were very competitive in their BMW 125i’s qualifying in 13th and 14th respectively.

Aidan Moffat qualified 15th in the second of the Infiniti Q50’s.
