Romain Grosjean’s Haas exploded after being buried into the barriers. The Frenchman was able to escape but has reported to have burns and broken ribs.
Romain Grosjean made contact with Alpha Tauri’s Danill Kvyat on the first lap and cannoned into the barriers out of turn 3. Upon impact, the Haas ignited into a sickening fireball. Dr Ian Roberts and Dr Alan van der Merwe made it onto the scene immediately and heroically climbed into the flames to pull out Grosjean, who had been in engulfed for over 30 seconds. Numerous Marshals tended the flames and their actions may have saved the life of the Frenchman.
There was a tense wait for news as the TV cameras avoided the scene of the accident. Thankfully, the cameras showed a very shaken, limping Grosjean, who has now been taken to hospital.
The race is due to be resumed in 30 minutes, but the F1 world has been shaken after witnessing such a horrific crash.
