The opening round of the 2021 Formula E season, due to take place in Chile, has been postponed as the country increases border restrictions.

After the immense disruption to the 2020 Formula E season due to the Coronavirus pandemic, teams and drivers were surely hoping a similar fate would not befall the start of the 2021 season.

However, in light of current events, the all-electric championship has been forced to postpone their opening round in Santiago Chile, scheduled to have taken place on the 16-17th of January. This news comes in light of the Chilean government’s decision to impose a ban on UK residents entering the country. With half of the championship’s teams having operations based in the UK, organisers have decided that the opening race weekend simply isn’t viable.

Both Formula E and Santiago officials hope to be able to reschedule the race for later in the year with Formula E not revealing a full race calendar due to the rapidly developing worldwide situation.

The next race currently scheduled to take place is a historic nighttime double-header in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia on the 26th and 27th of February.
