Van Amersfoort Racing’s rookie Franco Colapinto secured his and the team’s maiden Formula 3 victory from reversed pole in a frantic Sprint Race at Imola.
The race went perfectly for the only Argentinian driver from the grid, despite switching to second on Lap 5 as MP Motorsport’s Caio Collet led the majority of the session before he collided with Isack Hadjar in the final lap, preventing the two from taking their third and second podium.
Carlin’s Zak O’Sullivan and Campos Racing’s Josep Maria Marti brought the first safety car into the session, as both cars ran off the track at the same corner.
The green flag was out on Lap 10, but it was short-lived as Van Amersfoort Racing’s Reece Ushijima and Jenzer Motorsport’s Frederico Malvestiti made contact, and the pair had to run into the wall, marking the second stoppage from the race with a safety car.
Further down, ART’s Victor Martins extended his championship lead with ten points over PREMA Racing’s Arthur Leclerc, as the Frenchman completed the hard-fought race in second from P7.
The only PREMA Racing driver that was fortunate enough to bring the podium home on the team’s home soil was Jak Crawford in third, as his teammates Arthur Leclerc and Oliver Bearman were faced with difficulties.
Trident’s Roman Stanek made it to fourth, ahead of Hadjar in fifth, after an eventful day to take another podium under his name, as the Trident duo Zane Maloney and Oliver Rasmussen completed the race in sixth and seventh, respectively.
Kaylen Frederick placed his Hitech Grand Prix in the eighth, which was his best result in the series. MP Motorsport’s Alexander Smolyar ended the race in ninth, as Jenzer Motorsport’s Rafael Villagomez took the final spot inside the top 10.
The FIA Formula 3 will be back for the Feature Race with Trident’s Zane Maloney joined by his teammate Roman Stanek on the front row at 08:50 AM local times.
