Felipe Drugovich scored his fourth FIA Formula 2 pole position of the season in qualifying at Zandvoort as a crash dented Theo Pourchaire’s title hopes.

MP Motorsport’s Drugovich set a time of 1m20.719s following a stoppage for Pourchaire’s incident to finish 0.226 seconds clear of Virtuosi’s Jack Doohan before a spin for Jehan Daruvala caused a second red flag period.

Doohan, who built on his win last time out at Spa-Francorchamps by topping Friday’s free practice, beat Drugovich’s early benchmark of 1m21.915s to lead qualifying before Pourchaire crashed at the banked turn three.

After a delay for barrier repairs, Doohan improved on his best time while Ayuma Iwasa and Logan Sargeant moved up to second and third.

Iwasa then leapt to the top of the timesheets following a pitstop for fresh tyres, but the DAMS driver was beaten moments later by Sargeant.

But Drugovich responded by lapping 0.5s quicker than the pair, with an improved effort from Doohan moving the Australian back up to second.

Prema’s Daruvala spun to a halt on the exit of turn seven, halting the session again with four minutes remaining, with no driver able to challenge Drugovich after the resumption.

Sargeant was third ahead of Dutchman Richard Verschoor, with Iwasa fifth.  Carlin’s Liam Lawson was sixth ahead of Dennis Hauger and Juri Vips.

MP Motorsport will also have a car starting on pole for the sprint race, with Clement Novalak setting the 10th fastest time. He will be joined on the front row for the partially-reversed grid contest by Hitech GP’s Marcus Armstrong, who was ninth quickest.

ART’s Frederick Vesti had looked on course to make the top ten on his final effort, but remained in 11th after a trip through the gravel.

Pourchaire ended up 16th, one place ahead of Daruvala.
