Ferrari Academy driver Ollie Bearman snatched pole position for Sunday’s Formula 2 feature race in the final moments of qualifying at Barcelona.

Have finished second behind Prema team-mate Frederik Vesti in Friday’s free practice, Bearman posted a late effort in the 30-minute qualifying session to edge Rodin Carlin’s Enzo Fittipaldi by 0.77 seconds.

Fittipaldi led the way early on before Virtuosi’s Jack Doohan moved to the top with a 1m24.078s lap. MP Motorsport driver Dennis Hauger then improved the benchmark to a 1m23.923s.

Having completed his two tyre runs early, Hauger watched on from the pitwall as his time remained at the top for the next few minutes. Fittipaldi staked his claim for a maiden pole in the closing stages with 1m23,623s, while ART’s Theo Pourchaire moved up to second.

But Bearman sealed his second F2 pole with a 1m23.546s, while Doohan and Ayuma Iwasa also made late improvements to third and fourth ahead of Pourchaire, as Hauger slipped back to sixth.

Pourchaire’s team-mate Victor Martins was seventh ahead of points leader Vesti, while Jak Crawford and Amaury Cordeel rounded out the top-10, the latter provisionally taking reversed-grid pole for Saturday’s sprint race.
