A scary crash and heavy rain resulted in the Formula 2 sprint race at Zandvoort being ended prematurely without a full green-flag lap being completed.
Points leader Theo Pourchaire was due to start from reversed-grid pole after ending up 10th fastest in Friday’s qualifying, but an issue resulted in the ART GP driver starting the race from the pitlane.
The field completed two laps behind the safety car on a wet circuit, with Hitech GP’s Isack Hadjar leading at the rolling start.
But a three-car pileup brought proceedings to a halt within a few corners. Jak Crawford was spun around by Campos Racing’s Kush Maini, who was then collected by his own team-mate Ralph Boschung in poor visibility.
All three drivers emerged unscathed, with Maini’s car coming to rest on top of Boschung’s machine. There was a lengthy red flag period while barrier repairs were undertaken before the remaining cars rejoined the circuit behind the safety car.
But, with rain intensifying, officials brought out the red flags for a second time, with Hadjar leading from Victor Martins and Ollie Bearman. The race did not resume and, without the minimum two racing laps having been completed, no points were awarded.
Crawford will line up from his first F2 pole in Sunday’s feature race for Hitech ahead of MP Motorsport’s Dennis Hauger. Frederik Vesti is due to start seven places ahead of chief title rival Pourchaire from third on the grid.
