Campos Racing’s Isack Hadjar stormed to a maiden pole position in Formula 2 qualifying, while points leader Paul Aron ended up 12th following a late spin

Hadjar was 0.251 seconds faster than ART Grand Prix’s Victor Martins, while MP Motorsport’s Dennis Hauger edged team-mate Franco Colapinto to third.

Home favourite Ollie Bearman led early on for Prema with a 1m40.918s, while Hitech GP’s Aron moved into second ahead of Invicta Racing’s Kush Maini and Rodin Motorsport’s Zane Maloney.

Hauger improved the pace to a 1m40.554s but was then beaten by both Maini and Aron, the latter taking over at the top by almost 0.2s. Maloney reclaimed third but was then demoted one place by ART’s Zak O’Sullivan, and he remained in fourth despite improving further.

Commencing his second run on fresh tyres with less than 10 minutes remaining, Aron spun at Abbey and he was soon knocked off top spot by Hauger. Aron was not able to go any quicker and was shuffled down the order, with Colapinto briefly going fastest before Hadjar snatched pole with a 1m39.368s.

Martins climbed to second while Hauger tumbled to seventh as others improved but responded late on to take third, demoting Colapinto and Bearman to fourth and fifth. Invicta’s Gabriel Bortoleto was sixth ahead DAMS’ Jak Crawford, while Maini and Maloney both made late improvements to take eighth and ninth.

Prema’s Andrea Kimi Antonelli is due to start from reversed-grid pole for the sprint race after setting the 10th fastest time.
