Campos Racing’s Noel Leon scored his second Formula 2 sprint race victory in a row by leading from start to finish on the streets of Monte Carlo.
The Mexican racer lined up from reversed-grid pole, having been 10th quickest in qualifying, and he made good use of his opportunity to lead DAMS’ Roman Bilinski into Sainte Devote at the start.
The race was largely uneventful from there, with Bilinksi remaining within one second of Leon for the most part before finishing 3.4s behind at the chequered flag.
MP Motorport’s Gabriele Mini ran third throughout to maintain his championship lead, while Leon moved up to second in the standings.
Invicta Racing’s Joshua Duerksen and DAMS’ Dino Beganovic came home close behind Mini in fourth and fifth respectively, and Martinius Stenshorne was a further 1.6s adrift in sixth despite the deficit being 6s at one stage.
ART GP’s Kush Maini applied early pressure on Stenshorne but had to settle for seventh, while Rafael Camara scored the final point by taking a distant eighth – and the Invicta driver will start from his first pole in Sunday’s feature race.
Rodin Motorsport’s Alex Dunne finished ninth, having lost two places at the start, and Leon’s team-mate Nikola Tsolov rounded out the top 10.
The main battle of the race came for 11th place, with Ritomo Miyata prevailing by pulling off a move with three laps to go into turn 12 on Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak, who then retired with an issue of the final lap. MP’s Oliver Goethe also failed to see the chequered flag.
