Legendary Formula 1 engineer Sir Patrick Head has returned to Williams in an advisory role.
Williams failed to have their car ready in time for pre-season testing at Barcelona, missing the first two and a half days. When the team did get running they found themselves at the back of the pack, a long way off the pace of the rest of the midfield.
At the Australian Grand Prix two weeks ago, both cars were last to cross the finish line.
With the late arrival of the 2019 car and after a poor 2018 with its predecessor, this led to the departure of Chief Technical Officer, Paddy Lowe.
Williams will be hoping that Head’s expertise will help steady the ship whilst they rebuild.
Head co-founded Williams with Sir Frank Williams in 1976 and he still remains a part owner and shareholder.
His cars pushed the boundaries of technology at the time with Head introducing a number of concepts that were banned before they competed, most notably the six-wheeled FW08B.
During the 1990s, with both Head and Newey designing cars together, they dominated a number of seasons including 1992, Nigel Mansell’s championship winning year.
Head took a step back from the team in 2004, moving to the position of Director of Engineering. In 2012 he left the team and went into retirement.
