A collision between Prema team-mates Mick Schumacher and Robert Shwartzman allowed Yuki Tsunoda to grab his maiden FIA Formula 2 win at Silverstone in the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix sprint race.
Red Bull junior Tsunoda ran in third for most of the race in his Carlin behind the Prema pair, with polesitter Shwartzman leading from Schumacher.
A small mistake dropped Schumacher off the tail of the leader after applying some early pressure, but was able close back in during the latter stages.
With three laps to go Schumacher swept around the outside of his team-mate for the lead at the end of the Wellington Straight, but was too quick to move back to the racing line, clipping Shwartzman’s front wing.
As the two cars ran wide, Tsnoda nipped through to take the lead, with Schumacher slotting into second. But Shwartzman suffered front wing damage, the championship contender dropping down the field and out of the points.
Tsunoda cruised to victory by 3.1s from an apologetic Schumacher, with Jack Aitken repeating his result from Saturday’s feature race by taking third place for Campos.
Louis Deletraz fended off Guanyu Zhou to finish fourth place for Charouz, with the Virtuosi driver 0.8s behind in fifth.
Saturday’s feature race winner Callum Ilott extended his championship lead with sixth place in the reverse grid encounter, with his two closest rivals Shwartzman and Christian Lundgaard failing to score.
ART’s Lundgaard, who finished second on Saturday, made up two places on the opening lap to run fifth, but was passed by Deletraz and Zhou before a late puncture dropped him down the field.
Dan Ticktum bounced back from a difficult race on Saturday to take seventh for DAMS, 0.7s behind Ilott, with Hitech’s Nikita Mazepin rounding out the point scorers in eighth.
