Colin Turkington took pole at a cold, overcast Snetterton after topping the BTCC’s first top 10 showdown qualifying session.
It’s the first time BTCC qualifying has changed from the usual 30-minute Saturday afternoon session since the NGTC regulations were brought in.
Cold temperatures meant tyre warm up was a major issue with the fastest laps being set on the drivers’ second or third flying laps.
Rory Butcher topped the first part of qualifying ahead of Adam Morgan and Ash Sutton, with the latter spending the majority of the session outside the top 10.
Senna Proctor missed out on the top 10 shootout by just 0.168s and will start round 22 in 11th ahead of Josh Cook, Chris Smiley, Tom Chilton and Stephen Jelley.
Turkington’s lap of 1:56.858s usurped Jake Hill at the end of the 10-minute showdown to take his second pole of the 2020 season.
Tom Ingram finished the session in third just 0.018s behind Hill and 0.015s ahead of fourth-placed Butcher.
Dan Cammish qualified fifth ahead of championship contender Sutton.
Tom Oliphant and Ollie Jackson will start in seventh and eighth with Aidan Moffat and Morgan rounding out the top 10.
