Enzo Fittipaldi suffered a broken heel in the terrifying startline crash in Sunday’s FIA Formula 2 feature race, while Theo Pourchaire confirmed that he is “fine.”
The incident occurred when ART driver Pourchaire stalled from third on the grid before being collected by the unsighted Charouz car of Fittipaldi, which had started several rows behind.
The drivers were extracted at the scene by medical crews during a lengthy red flag period before being transferred to hospital, with the FIA confirming that both were conscious.
The pair have since taken to social media to give an update on their condition, with Fittipaldi confirming an injury to his heel.
“Hey guys, I am very grateful that I only broke my heel and have some cuts and bruises,” said Fittipaldi on Twitter.
“Thank you all for the messages, as well as the FIA and medical staff for taking great care of me. I am very happy that Theo is ok. I will be back on track soon and faster than ever.”
Fittipaldi, grandson of two-time Formula 1 world champion Emerson, scored his best result in Saturday’s second sprint race with seventh, having made the step up to F2 mid-season from FIA Formula 3.
Pourchaire avoided serious injury, but is unsure whether he will be fit to race at this weekends final round in Abu Dhabi.
Hey everyone, Just wanted to tell you that I’m globally fine!,” said Pourchaire on Twitter. “For the moment I don’t know if it’s already the end of the season for me. But the most important is not that, that was a really big one and Enzo is injured.”
“I wish him the best recovery possible.”
Despite the crash, Pourchaire moved up one place to fifth in the standings during the penultimate round in Jeddah, having climbed from 19th to sixth in race two. The Frenchman has impressed in his rookie season, winning the feature race in Monaco, but suffered a fractured arm in a collision in Baku.
