Formula 1: Russell wins Canadian GP sprint following contact with teammate

@F1 X

George Russell was able to convert a sprint pole into a sprint win after making contact with teammate Antonelli in the early parts of the race.

It was a very tidy getaway from everybody on the grid as most of the field were able to make it through the first couple of corners more or less in the position they started, though Hamilton was able to get himself up to 4th.

This marked quite the improvement for Mercedes, who had been struggling to get off the line at the start of races so far this season.

Things were quite processional in the opening couple of laps of the race, though the two Mercedes cars remained close to each other while breaking away from the pack.

Then, on lap 5, Russell ran wide at the hairpin of turn 10, giving Antonelli an opportunity to go for the lead. Russell was able to fend his teammate off heading into the final chicane, but Antonelli had another run heading into turn 1, trying to go around the outside of the corner, but went onto the grass. Antonelli would have another opportunity trying to move down the inside at turn 8, but he would lock up and bounce across the grass, giving 2nd place to Norris.

At the same time as that was happening, Hadjar reported that he had an engine issue which caused him to tumble down the field, causing him to eventually end the race in 21st place.

The race would turn into a three way fight for the lead between Russell, Norris and Antonelli, all of whom were pushing hard, though no changes in the running order were able to be made.

Further behind in the battle for fourth, Hamilton hit the outside wall at the exit of the final chicane, which almost gave Piastri behind the run he needed to reclaim the fourth place position he started the race with.

Coming into the final lap, Antonelli was desperate to get back up to second place, trying once again to make a move stick around the outside of turn 1, and once again failing in his attempts to gain a position with that move, allowing for the sprint to end in a Mercedes 1-3, with Norris sandwiched in the middle of the podium places.

On the penultimate lap, Piastri was able to finally snatch 4th back from Hamilton with a move at the final chicane, which also slowed Hamilton down enough to get caught by Leclerc going from 4th to 6th in a matter of seconds.
