James Colburn will be replacing Anton Spires at PP Motorsport for the remaining rounds of the Clio Cup Championship, as part of a plan to expand the team next season.
PP Motorsport intend to enter three cars into the 2017 season, with Spires and Colburn both driving for the team. The former Renault UK Clio Cup runner up has been mentoring Spires so far this season, but now it will be his turn to get in the Lincolnshire based team’s car.
“This will get James working with the team and our partners from behind the wheel, and Anton will also continue to learn more from him, only this time from the outside looking in,” said team principal John Creasey.
“I believe he [Spires] and James are going to work really well together next year as team-mates, and it will also be exciting to bring another new young name onto the grid with a third entry as well.”
Colburn, who raced in the series from 2009 to 2014 with a one off outing last season, is looking forward to getting back in the car. Despite being late into the championship, Colburn is aiming high and has already ruled out rolling over for the championship contenders.
“Silverstone could be tricky,” said the 23 year old. “You need a team-mate to play ball with as the slipstream there is crucial. But I expect to be right towards the front at Brands Hatch, one of my favourite circuits.
“If that means I’m running in company with the main players in the title race then so be it, but they will be getting a race. PP have brought me in to do a job, not to roll over for people. I’m out to get the best results I can for them.”
The Renault UK Clio Cup grid heads to Silverstone this weekend for the penultimate round of the championship before heading to Brands Hatch at the start of October.
