Wrigley takes championship lead ahead of final round

A strong weekend from Tom Wrigley means the Ginetta GT4 SuperCup will go down to the last race weekend next month at Brands Hatch. There are now thirty three points between him and his championship rival Will Burns, after both drivers took two podiums each at Silverstone.

Race One

Carl Boardley took pole for his sixtieth SuperCup race, alongside Jamie Orton. The Triple M driver stormed into the lead off of the line, whilst a three way battle for second lead to Boardley running wide and tumbling down the order.

Callum Pointon took second with Wrigley close behind him. The championship contender overtook Pointon on the third lap of the race and was soon setting fastest laps to pull away from the TCR driver.

Burns was caught up in his own battle, wedged between Ben Green and Mark Davies further back in the pack. As Wrigley closed in on Orton, Burns was trying to attack and defend at the same time. The championship contender lost out to Davies whilst Green was able to pull away a little.

Burns wouldn’t have to worry about Davies, though, with the TCR driver handed a five second penalty for exceeding the track limits. Though he was still ahead of Burns on the track, in the classification he would be dropped back to eleventh.

That didn’t mean he was off of the track, though. The battle continued, but ended in disaster as Green and Davies collided I the closing stages of the race. Both drivers retired, leaving Burns uncontested for fourth.

Wrigley couldn’t close the gap far enough to make a move on Orton, who would take victory.

Race Two

Orton would start on pole for the second race of the weekend, with Pointon alongside him. The Triple M driver got a good start, but ran wide, letting Pointon into the lead and allowing Burns and Wrigley to come alongside him.

A tight move from Wrigley saw him take second, only to run deep into the next corner and drop down to fourth, where Boardley was looking to get in on the action.

Meanwhile, in the AM class, race one winner, Colin White, was moving slowly, having lost drive. The class leader came into the pits, meaning he wouldn’t tak the class win for only the fourth time this season.

At the front of the pack, Orton was reeling in Pointon, who had been unchallenged at the front of the pack. Burns was still keeping the pole sitter under pressure before Wrigley got alongside his championship rival.

The pair were running side by side with Boardly right behind the pair of them. As Wrigley ran wide, allowing Burns through and a move by Boardley around the outside of both cars took him into the podium positions.

The battle between the championship contenders continued whilst Orton continued to chase after Pointon. Finally, the race one winner managed to get past Pointon, also with a nice move around the outside.

In the closing stages of the race first, second, third, and fourth were all nose to tail, the win open to anybody. It was Orton who ended up on top, though, with Boardley snatching second and Burns completing the podium.

The AM class saw a close fought battle between Fraser Robertson and Chris Ingram. It would be Robertson who would take the class win, with Ingram and Graham Tilley joining him on the podium.

Race Three

The reverse grid draw put Davies on pole with team mate Pointon alongside him and the two championship contenders on the second row. None of them were able to get past Davies off of the line, though, the pole sitter managing to keep the lead of the race until he was handed a five second penalty for – you guessed it – track limits.

Things went from bad to worse for Davies. The pole sitter was passed by Boardley and Wrigley and wasn’t too far ahead of Burns. Burns was able to get ahead of Davies on the corrected times, but not on the track meaning he couldn’t take the fight to his championship rival. Wrigley would finish the race second and Burns third, putting the Rob Boston Racing driver in the lead of the championship.

In the AM class, it was yet another win for Colin White, who now has a sixty three point lead at the top of the class.
