Paul Streather has made the move to WDE Motorsport for his second season in the Renault UK Clio Cup.
The Hinckley based driver found success in his debut season, eventually finishing seventh in the championship having taken points in all but one round last season. He kicked off his Clio Cup career with a win in the very first season, and WDE believe he will keep the team at the sharp end of the field.
“I’ve tested with WDE and, with them, I’ll have full-time teammates to compare data with which is bound to bring me on more as a drive,” Streather said. “They also have vast experience of running the UK Clio Cup race car.”
Streather’s two Finesse teammates in 2016 could only race in selected rounds, meaning he only had a teammate to share the garage with at six of the nine rounds last season.
“Looking ahead, I’m raring to go with some preseason testing with WDE, and the opening two rounds in early April on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit – it’s WDE’s local track, it’s my favourite track, and, of course, it holds great memories for me from 12 months ago.”
WDE also had a successful 2016, with star Paul Rivett finishing the season fourth and Charlie Ladell ninth with two podium finishes. The team is aiming higher this year, believing Streather will challenge for the title this season.
“Paul’s signature really adds to the driving force of WDE in 2017,” said team principal Wayne Eason. “In 2016, still new to the championship, he became a winner and showed great race craft and that he’s one of the best overtakers in the business.
“Building on his experiences from 2016, we believe we have the set-up to see him emerge as a genuine title challenger in 2017.”
WDE are set to announce Streather’s two teammates soon, before the championship kicks off in April.
