Nearly 700 days after winning the final race of W Series’ inaugural season at Brands Hatch in August 2019, Alice Powell took the top spot as the W Series returned to action in Austria.

The 28-year-old driver led all the way from pole position to the chequered flag and chalked up the fastest lap, to complete a perfect weekend for the Brit as she led in practice and secured pole position.

Compatriot Sarah Moore took P2, to become the first openly LGBTQ+ driver on an F1 pole, while Liechtenstein’s Fabienne Wohlwend took P3 after stating ninth.

Defending champion Jamie Chadwick had an early setback but recovered well to finish seventh.

Powell made an excellent start from pole position with Moore behind, while Belen Garcia kept hold of third despite coming under pressure from Beitske Visser.

Despite early gains for Chadwick, contact with Jess Hawkins knocked Hawkins to eighth and Chadwick to 16th.  The contact didn’t hold the pair of them back for too long as Chadwick set the fastest lap and after a cracking battle with Marta Garcia, Hawkins took seventh place.

Meanwhile, Moore was under increasing pressure from Belen Garcia for second place, this all conspired to help Powell who took advantage of the clear air at the front to post the fastest lap, taking it away from Chadwick.  Belen Garcia ran wide at turn six as the race entered its halfway stage allowing Moore some space to think and promoting Visser to third.

The safety car arrived with eight minutes left as Marta Garcia pulled off the track on the back straight, leaving a sprint finish as the race entered its closing stages.

Contact between Emma Kimiläinen and Visser as we got the green light to race sent Visser to the back of the field and promoted Wohlwend to third. Incidents between Abbie Eaton and Kimiläinen helped promote Chadwick to finish seventh.

W Series will return to the Red Bull Ring on Saturday 3 July in support of Formula 1’s Austrian Grand Prix.
