Campos Racing’s Lorenzo Colombo scores his maiden F3 win after conquering the wet race in the Spa-Francorchamps circuit.
The Italian driver climbed his way back to victory, becoming the 10th different winner this season after he handed the win to Ayumu Iwasa as he received a time penalty in Budapest, which denied his maiden win.
Colombo started the race from the reversed grid pole under a wet condition in Belgium, delivering a dominant drive ahead of the Hitech drivers, Jak Crawford and Roman Stanek.
Despite the weather forecast that predicted no rain on Saturday, the race got delayed for almost an hour after three formation laps due to an extremely wet condition.
The drivers remained to stay behind the safety car for the opening three laps of the race, as Colombo pulled away to take the lead once the pack is racing under the green flag conditions.
With Jak Crawford, Roman Stanek, and the rookie Johnathan Hoggard racing behind Colombo, he continued to set the fastest lap from the race, extending the gap to more than 10 seconds.
The Hitech duo made it to the podium as Roman Stanek clinched for his second podium of the season, and Jak Crawford claimed the maiden rostrum in P3, making him the youngest ever podium sitter in F3.
ART’s Frederik Vesti ended the race in fourth ahead of MP Motorsport’s Victor Martins in the fifth place, after the chaotic battle that involved Caio Collet and Johnathan Hoggard in the thrilling final three laps of Race 1.
The rookie Johnathan Hoggard proved his best race finish in sixth for Jenzer Motorsport with Trident’s Clement Novalak in seventh, as he was unable to find enough pace.
Logan Sargeant was eighth for Charouz Racing, followed by MP Motorsport’s Caio Collet in ninth due to the five seconds penalty for leaving the track that dropped him five places back from the fourth place.
Alexander Smolyar finished the 45 minutes long race in tenth for ART Grand Prix, with Trident’s David Schumacher finishing behind him after the German driver gave up on the battle and fell out of points to the eleventh place.
Following the reverse grid format, Jack Doohan will be the pole sitter on Race 2 ahead of David Schumacher and Alexander Smolyar. The second race of the Belgian Grand Prix will start at 05.55 PM local times.
