Carlin’s Logan Sargeant scored his first FIA Formula 2 pole position in Friday’s qualifying session at Silverstone.
Sargeant was the quickest driver in the first half of the 30-minute session, and then found a further half a second on his second run to beat ART’s Frederick Vesti by 0.107s.
Vesti led the way early on by 0.3s from Virtuosi’s Jack Doohan. Championship leader Drugovich had looked on course to go quicker, but a sideways moment under braking meant he posted the third quickest lap behind the pair.
Sargeant then leapt to the top with a 1m38.946s, with Prema’s Jehan Daruvala taking advantage of an empty track to go second at the halfway stage.
After returning to track on fresh tyres, Sargeant then posted a 1m38.432s, which proved unbeatable in the final minutes, with Vesti improving to second.
Despite a late spin, Drugovich was only a further 0.014s behind in third for MP Motorsport, with ART’s Theo Pourchaire setting an identical time to the Brazilian but ended up fourth.
Sargeant’s team-mate Liam Lawson was close behind in fifth, ahead of DAMS’s Ayuma Iwasa.
Doohan slipped back to seventh ahead of Hitech GP’s Juri Vips. Charouz’s Enzo Fittipaldi was ninth ahead of Daruvala, who is due to start Saturday’s sprint race from pole.
