Formula 2: Gelael ruled out for six weeks after Barcelona incident

Sean Gelael looks set to miss the next four rounds of the FIA Formula 2 season as a result of a back-breaking crash sustained in Saturday’s feature race at Barcelona.

The DAMS driver was hospitalised after a last-lap collision with Campos Racing’s Jack Aitken during the race, his car landing on a sausage kerb after becoming airborne.

Gelael was forced to miss Sunday’s sprint race after being diagnosed with a broken D4 vertebra and, after returning home, he has revealed that he will be unable to return to the cockpit for at least six weeks.

As well as being ruled out of this month’s race at Spa Francorchamps, Gelael is also likely to miss September’s three rounds at Monza, Mugello and Sochi.

“I’m back home in Jakarta as a result of the injury,” Gelael confirmed on his Instagram page. “I will be out for 6 weeks minimum, which will mean I will miss majority of the races.”

“It has been a very challenging season, and because of the support of all of you, we still keep working hard, we still keep faith, and we still thank God for everything.”

No further dates have been added to the 2020 calendar beyond Sochi, though an additional two rounds are expected, which could give Gelael a chance to return to action before the end of the year.

DAMS have not yet confirmed who will replace Gelael alongside Dan Ticktum in the team for the next few rounds.
