Both practice sessions were cancelled as heavy rain and fog hit the German track.
The conditions were deemed unsafe for the Medical Helicopter and all running was suspended. This meant that the first F1 session in 7 years at the Nürburgring would have to wait until Saturday.
This prevented the teams from sourcing valuable data at a track which the current hybrid engines have never raced at. Furthermore, the temperatures at the track are expected to be the coldest that the cars will see this year. While not ideal for the teams, an already tantalising weekend has become even more unpredictable.
However, the people who lost out the most were the two F2 drivers scheduled to run during FP1. Mick Schumacher, currently leading the championship, was due to take Giovinazzzi’s seat while Callum Ilot, 2nd in the standings, was to step in at Haas. While this is a huge shame, both drivers have been strongly hinted to take the respective seats for the entirety of the 2021 season, so it may not be too long before we see the young talents take to the track.
FP3 and qualifying are due to take place at the scheduled time tomorrow, however the weather is still expected to potentially throw some surprises our way. Clear weather is expected to return for Sunday, but the forecast is currently changing on an hourly basis.
