Dan Rowbottom took his maiden pole in the BTCC ahead of his Team Dynamics team mate Gordon Shedden at the Brands Hatch Indy circuit.
Rowbottom performed well all session, eventually finishing just 0.005s ahead of Shedden.
Colin Turkington had set the early pace with a 50.941 with Adam Morgan and Tom Chilton just behind.
The MB Motorsport duo of Jake Hill and Ollie Jackson then usurped Turkington putting themselves 1 – 2.
Hill stayed on top of the session with Tom Oliphant and Dan Rowbottom putting themselves in second and third respectively.
Tom Ingram held fourth with Shedden in fifth and Sutton in sixth before the drivers pitted for their second set of tyres with quarter of an hour of the session left.
Although the majority of the cars were on the track, it took a while before any of the drivers were able to set any fastest times with Shedden the first to make any moves, putting himself into third.
The Team Dynamics team mates appeared to have the edge with Rowbottom setting the fastest time of the session with just five minutes remaining.
Shedden then joined Rowbottom on the front row.
Hill held onto third with Oliphant and Aiden Moffat just behind.
Ingram qualified sixth with Sutton and Chris Smiley in seventh and eighth respectively.
Josh Cook and Stephen Jelley round out the top ten.
