Virtuosi’s Jack Doohan dominated the Formula 2 feature race in Budapest ahead of Frederik Vesti, who extended his points lead.
Doohan finished over nine seconds clear of Vesti, while Victor Martins finished third and Theo Pourchaire lost ground to Vesti in the championship by coming home sixth.
Vesti moved ahead of Martins into second at the start, with the pair making contact at turn one, while Doohan pulled clear at the front from pole.
Things remained close in the early laps, with Doohan leading Vesti by one second. The Australian eventually managed to shake off his pursuer and build a six-second gap before making his mandatory pitstop with 14 of the 37-lap contest remaining to switch from soft to medium compound tyres.
Vesti pitted two laps earlier than Doohan, but a slow stop left him under pressure from his main rival Pourchaire on rejoining. Martins emerged from his pitstop in front of Vesti, but he was unable to keep the Mercedes Junior behind him.
Pourchaire tried to follow Vesti through, but he was denied by his ART Grand Prix team-mate Martins, who slammed the door at turn three. Things got worse for Pourchaire one corner later when another attempt to pass Martins resulted in him going off the road and, with dirty tyres, then lost fifth to Ayumu Iwasa.
Doohan extended his lead before the chequered flag, while Martins finished less than a second behind Vesti in third.
Running an alternate strategy, Iwasa started the race on the medium tyres before making an early stop for the softs after 20 laps. He made use of his extra grip to pass the medium-shod Isack Hadjar for fourth with a few laps remaining.
Saturday’s sprint race winner Dennis Hauger and Rodin Carlin’s Enzo Fittipaldi finished close behind Pourchaire in seventh and eighth. Van Amersfoort Racing duo Juan Manuel Correa and Richard Verschoor were ninth and 10th.
Prema’s Ollie Bearman was another to start on the medium tyre but, having been passed by Hauger and Fittipaldi on the opening lap, eventually trailed home 12th behind Jehan Daruvala. Trident’s Clement Novalak retired early on with an issue.
